Gordon Dalton
D.O.B.: September, 1975
Home: Nelson County, Virginia (or wherever my
truck is parked at the moment).
Paddling since: 1993
Favorite Runs: Upper Cherry Ck, California;
Crystal R., Colorado; Big Timber Ck, Montana;
North Fork Blackwater, West Virginia; Bottom Creek,
Virginia
Gordon began guiding canoes in the
wilderness of northern Ontario, Canada at age 13. As
a teen, he worked all summer at a construction
job to buy his first canoe - a flatwater model - and
quickly exceeded its limits by taking it on his
local whitewater. His first first-descent was done
at age 15 on a creek that had been declared
off-limits to boating: he paddled the same old canoe
and his mother drove the get-away car! Gordon worked
as a video-kayaker on the New and Gauley Rivers in West
Virginia from 1995 until 2000. Gordon is now a speech
therapist in Virginia and spends his summers travelling
the country looking for new creeks and rivers to explore.
He has paddled more class V creeks in Colorado than
most long-time locals. Gordon and his friends are
continually opening up "new" creek runs
in Virginia, West Virginia and Colorado. Creek boating
and exploratory/expedition paddling are his whitewater
loves. He is lucky enough to live 10 minutes from a
ski resort and when the rivers are dry he can ride his
snowboard after work and look down at a neighborhood
class V creek from the ski-lift.
Gordon's wife, Wendy, is also a
skilled kayaker and a partner on many river trips. Gordon
has appearred in several kayaking videos, placed 2nd
in the 2004 international I.R. "Big Gun Show"
downriver competition, and is helping to write a new
guidebook for Colorado due out next year.
