How can I meet other paddlers?

The simplest way to meet other paddlers, if there are none in your circle of friends, is to contact your nearest canoe or kayak club. This could be a section of a local sports society, a club at work, at a university or a club in the town you live in. Your national canoeing body will also have leaflets available for beginners and lists of all the clubs in your area. If clubs are not your scene, then you can also try an outdoor pursuits center, or an advert, for example in a local paddling shop.

Where can I give it a go?

Either with friends, on an introductory course at a canoe school or club, or on your own with a hired boat. Or you can take an ESKIMO test boat of your choice for a day from one of our dealers.

Where can I learn?

Again, in a club or at a canoe school. Your national canoeing body will have details of courses running from a day's introduction, to longer, residential courses.

What do I need for white water paddling?

At first sight, paddling does not appear to be a particularly cheap hobby: you will need a decent, robust kayak, a sturdy paddle, and a watertight spray deck. On top of that you should have the appropriate safety equipment, which includes a buoyancy aid, a helmet and a throwbag. The equipment is completed by a paddle cag, and a wetsuit. On the other hand, however, paddling is an outdoor sport with no ongoing costs. Paddlers don't need a lift pass, or to rent a hall, or mooring space, and good equipment will last for several years - without going out of fashion...

What do I need to be aware of when choosing my white water kayak?

ESKIMO

A white water kayak has a lot to put up with,

so it needs to be as strong as possible. Modern white water kayaks are made from polyethylene. ESKIMO uses modern advanced blow moulding technology and high molecular polyethylene. You can find out more about this under the heading "Technology"...

Test the Safety Features!

The handles of a white water kayak are not just designed for carrying. In rescue situations they can also make the difference between life and death. So they don't just have to be ergonomically designed, but also very strong.
A good white water kayak absolutely must be fitted with a padded, bulkhead footrest. Not only does the footrest help keep you firmly seated within the kayak, but it also cushions the paddler in case of impact and reduces the risk of injury.
ESKIMO's safety equipment is put through its paces by the company's own ProTeam.

In order to be able to get in and out of the boat quickly, nothing must obstruct or hinder the cockpit area!

The seat, backrest, thigh braces and footrest are responsible for holding you comfortably and safely in the kayak. When trying out a boat in a shop, check that the footrest and backrest are in the correct position. The backrest should be padded, and neither the thigh braces nor the seat should press on any pressure points.

Take note of the kayak's weight. This is not only important when carrying it, but lighter kayaks are also easier and quicker to maneuver. Not only will this increase your enjoyment level - it will also improve safety. ESKIMO-kayaks are among the lightest!

And another thing: Freedom of movement! When sitting in a kayak, you should be able to lean right back without the cockpit rim pressing into your spine. Not only does this reduce the risk of injury, it also makes Eskimo rolls easier.
